Before building the actual set, I sat my crew down and gave them all the risk assessment and explained any risks that could happen when building the set. I made them all aware of the risks, how they should act safely when building the set and other things they need to be aware of. In this video, my crew and I are building the set to make it look like a living room. First, we got the wood for the backdrop of the set and started assembling them together to make it look like walls. To make the walls look a bit more homely we covered the walls of the set with various wall paper and curtains, just so the set doesn't look too plain. I also added in some shelves, a sofa and a table to make it look like a family living room. I made sure that the set looked really homely, so I added in picture frames and various little trinkets to give the set that feel. I also wanted to make it look like the living room was from a council house; a house that doesn't look too expensive. Make it really look like an alcoholic lives there, to do this I made sure that certain parts of the set looks messy and dirty, such as the door.

Before the filming process began, I made sure that everyone on set had the risk assessment and knew of the potential risks that could happen and how to avoid certain risks. In this video, you can see me directing my actors. First of me reading through the script with my actors before being on set. Then of me on set and blocking my actors on where I want them to go and what to do, during this process you can see me holding my storyboard as a reference. There is also a video of me directing my camera operators on which shots to do and giving them feedback in regards of head room. The storyboard is with me whilst I am directing as it gives me the shots I need. I also changed the storyboard frequently when directing, as some shots my camera crew can't do and I need to change accordingly. For example in the second scene, I used the storyboard to see what shots I need for that particular scene.

You can see me directing my actors on what I want them to do and how to act around location. Between and before each shots, I looked at my storyboard for reference so knew which shots I needed to take, this is so I didn't forget any important shots. You can also see me on camera, filming all the shots I need. For example, when I was directing my actor Joseph on how to enter the room, I needed to look at my storyboard to see what shot I would be using and then blocked Joseph on where he should be so it would look good in the shot I was planning to use.

Witness Statement by Maria on Scribd |
Storylines: There are 2 storylines being shown in my soap opera which is of Emma's alcohol problem and Liam's sexuality. However, it focuses more on Liams' sexuality than Emma's drinking problem. This conforms to the conventions of soap operas as all soap operas have multiple storylines going on in one episode, also all storylines in soap operas intertwine and relate with each other. I conform to this as both Emma and Liam are family and that both of their storylines coincide with one another and effect each other.Liam is also a transvestite, his sexuality shows off a controversial issue that isn't really talked about in public or in TV. This conforms to the convention of storylines as many soap operas are used as a platform to address controversial issues and get the public talking.
Characters: I made sure to include a female and a male character in my soap opera, this is so it conforms to the convention how the characters relate to the audience; the audience has 2 representatives they can relate to. By having both genders as well, it would appeal to a much more mass audience as all of the audience would feel included. In the first rusher, it shows the character Liam and how he is a transvestite and not a stereotypical boy. This conforms to he convention of having diverse characters as it shows off a group of people that aren't really shown a lot in TV, and that they have someone in the soap to relate and bond with. By having diverse characters in my drama means that there is more mass appeal. |

Set/Location: Rusher 2 shows off the set used in the shot, the set is off a semi-clean kitchen, where there are a couple of dishes in the sink, but everything else is pretty clean. By having a kitchen set it conforms to the convention of soap operas as it is a place where the audience will be able to recognise. It also helps the audience feel more at home as they all have a kitchen at home. With the fact that the kitchen isn't very clean helps the audience relate more to the show, as majority of the audience won't always have a clean kitchen. By making the kitchen more like the audiences one at home, it makes the audience feel more at home and like they are in the scene.
Characters: In this rusher it shows off the character Emma. Emma is a typical character that would be found on a soap opera, this is because she is an alcoholic. This conforms to the convention of characters as Emma is a character the audience will be able to recognise and sympathise with and be able to bond with. |
Storylines:
In rusher 3, it properly shows the storyline of the entire soap as it shows how Liam and his family is reacting to his sexuality. The storyline in this extract does follow the conventional storylines in a soap opera as it is of a controversial topic that isn't really mentioned a lot during TV or public. By having a controversial topic it allows the audience to have a conversation and gets people to become more open minded with this topic. The storyline also conforms to the convention of soap operas as it is of a topic that is currently really 'hot' and popular with the public right now, LGBTQ+. It also has another storyline that is running alongside Liams sexuality, which is Emma's drinking problem. This conforms to the convention of soap operas, as there are normally always more than one storyline per episode. Even though it is not the main focus in this rusher, the storyline of Emma's drinking problem is included as in the rusher it shows how Emma is incredibly drunk and how she is surrounded by wine. Characters: The characters Liam and Emma are related to each other as they are siblings, they are the main focus in this segment of the soap. The audience can clearly tell they are family and siblings as Emma states "Liam, my brother". The interaction between the two characters are also like interactions teenage siblings are stereotypically known to have. This conforms to the convention of soap operas, as in soap operas all characters are intertwined and related to each other in some way. This creates a sense of community within the soap opera, allowing the audience to be able to bond with the character and community. Format:In this rusher it follows the conventional format of soap operas, as in my soap it focuses on a mini character story before then ending on a cliffhanger. This conforms to the conation of soap operas as by ending the scene in a cliffhanger the audience would want to know more and what happens, therefor watching the next episode. |

Make Up:The makeup on Liam creates meaning like his costume does. It shows how he has 2 different personalities; one at day and one at night. During the day he doesn't wear any makeup, due to the fact that the people he lives with and in his town have very stereotypical views on boys and makeup. Where that is it is strange and abnormal for a boy to wear makeup and therefor shouldn't happen. This creates meaning as it shows a direct reflection on todays society and their views on boys and makeup. It shows how todays society views can affect a way a person acts, talks and feels. Liam is aware of the views, therefor he makes sure he doesn't wear any makeup to avoid prejudice and try and seem normal and fit into the society he is in.
|
This creates meaning as it shows what people Liam's age are trying to do, fit into society even if they don't want to just to avoid being laughed at or even bullied. His makeup at night, unlike at day, is very over the top. Making him look like a completely different person, this creates meaning as it shows how Liam has two different personalities and how he is like a different person on the way he acts in makeup.
